Latest contract offer from Canton-Potsdam Hospital prompts worker protest

Canton-Potsdam (N.Y.) Hospital employees on Tuesday protested a decrease in benefits proposed by hospital managers in their latest contract, according to a Watertown Daily Times report.

The employees, which include nurses and technical workers, are represented by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.

The latest contract offered a 1.5 percent increase in wages, but simultaneously proposed a decrease in overtime pay and an increase in health insurance costs, according to the article.

In addition to the picket at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, a second and smaller informational picket occurred at the E.J. Noble Clinic in Canton, N.Y., reports Watertown Daily Times.

Dana L. Thomas, an MRI technologist at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, told the publication the purpose of both pickets was to rally community support.

A message left by Becker's Hospital Review at the hospital seeking comment was not immediately returned Wednesday afternoon.
