California nursing board slices into licensing backlog

California's nursing board has made significant progress toward clearing up a licensing backlog, reports California Healthline.

Last month, the California Board of Registered Nursing, which vets nurses for licensing in the state, had not moved beyond applications from recent graduates filed in March, according to the article. But now the agency reports on its website that it is processing applications filed by new nurses in early August.

Similar progress is being made to reduce the backlog of applications from out-of-state nurses seeking to relocate in California.

The backlog problem, which has been ongoing since at least 2014, has partly been attributed to the flawed $96 million implementation of a computer system called BreEZe, which aimed to streamline professional licensing, according toCalifornia Healthline.

The board's new executive officer, Joseph Morris, told the publication he is slated to speak about the backlog at a nursing board meeting this week and plans to detail the agency's recent efforts to train additional staff and share documents digitally.
