Waterbury (Conn.) Hospital has cut 83 positions, leading to some layoffs, according to a Republican-American report.
The workforce reduction extended to every level of the hospital, including clinical workers, according to the report. The cuts, along with other budget controls, are expected to save Waterbury Hospital about $5 million in the next year.
"It was a very difficult decision, and not one we made lightly. However, it is our responsibility to make the hard choices necessary to ensure this organization can continue to provide sustainable healthcare to the people of our community," Darlene Stromstad, Waterbury Hospital's president and CEO, said, according to the Republican-American.
The hospital employed more than 2,000 individuals prior to the cuts, according to the hospital's website.
