Members of 1199 SEIU union rallied March 3 in Troy, N.Y., for higher wages for area healthcare workers, according to a Times Union report.

1. The rally, which took place near St. Mary's Hospital, involved about a dozen people.
2. Rally participants said raising wages for healthcare workers, such as hospital housekeeping and dietary jobs, as well as some caregivers, may be an important step to lowering Troy's poverty rates, according to the report.
3. St. Mary's corporate communications director Elmer Streeter told the Times Union the hospital believes its compensation and benefits are "very competitive" with other area employers, and noted that employees earn a minimum starting wage of $10 per hour, which is above the state minimum wage.
