UC Hospital Workers Ratify Contract

Wrapping up two years of negotiations, which at times became contentious, University of California patient care technical workers ratified a four-year contract with the system, according to a KTVU report.

University of California includes five hospitals, and the new contract covers workers on all campuses.

The contract was ratified with 99 percent approval by the workers, members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299. The contract includes wage increases, staffing protections and changes to healthcare and pension benefits, according to the report.

The contract did not come easy, and workers went on strike twice, in May and November 2013. The workers were going to strike again in March, but the new contract averted that strike.

"We are disappointed that this process took as long as it did and became so contentious," UC Vice President Dwaine Duckett said in the report.
