Proposed legislation in Michigan aims to address hospital understaffing, according to a Detroit Free Press report.
Here are three things to know.
1. The proposal is part of a package of bills introduced in the state legislature.
2. The legislation would require hospitals to keep open records of nurse-to-patient ratios, according to the report. Under the legislation, hospitals would also have to develop staffing plans and ban mandatory nurse overtime.
3. The goal with the bills is to address understaffing and as a result decrease preventable medical errors, state Rep. Jon Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo, said, according to Detroit Free Press.
"We've been trying to raise attention to the safer hospitals campaign and calling out the fact that there is a significant number of preventable deaths that are happening because of key errors," he said.
