Portland-based Maine Medical Center has announced it will lay off 50 employees and eliminate 175 other positions, according to a Bangor Daily News report.
MMC experienced reduced reimbursements from government and commercial payers and an increase in charity care that led to a "budget gap," according to the report. The losses are what triggered the workforce reduction.
In addition to the eliminated positions and layoffs, 120 employees took an early retirement package. MMC is further trimming its budget by reducing top administrator's compensation by 12.5 percent.
"This is a difficult day that is unfortunate, but necessary for creating the future that our patients and employees want and deserve," Richard Petersen, MMC's president and CEO, said in the Bangor Daily News report. "As we've said all along, layoffs were our last resort, but they were unfortunately necessary in setting up the organization for future success."
