Hospitals add nearly 12k jobs in April

After showing very little growth in March — the nation added just 85,000 jobs then — the nation bounced back in April, as employers added 223,000 jobs. Healthcare contributed 45,200 jobs to that total, according to the most recent jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This is a huge increase from March's numbers, when healthcare added just 21,600 jobs. Over the past year, healthcare has added 390,000 jobs.

Within the healthcare industry, hospital employment grew by 11,800 jobs in April. However, ambulatory healthcare services added the most, with 25,300 jobs. Most of those came from physician offices (9,300) but outpatient care centers (3,400) and home healthcare services (2,700) also contributed.

Nursing homes added 8,100 jobs last month, making up for a loss of jobs in March, when the care sites lost 4,800 jobs.
