Bangor-based Eastern Maine Medical Center is transferring its laundry duties to an outside company, resulting in 16 layoffs, according to a WABI report.
Eleven people will continue to work in EMMC's laundry department.
The hospital's laundry system needed to be replaced, which would have cost the hospital $6 million to $8 million, according to WABI, which is why hospital officials decided to outsource. The hospital has not yet chosen the laundry company.
EMMC officials are attempting to find other jobs for the 16 affected workers.
