More than 900 diagnostic technologists at Ann Arbor-based Michigan Medicine have joined a new union, according to mlive.com.
The workers formed the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals union on Feb. 24.
A majority of members approved the union, a neutral third party verified the support, and the health system officially recognized it that day, union officials said, according to mlive.com.
With the new union, the UMMAP aims to improve worker retention.
"By coming together as a union, we can ensure our voices are heard across the healthcare system and our knowledge and expertise of what it takes to have a balanced work environment is respected," Angela Brogan, a union member who works at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, said in a statement, according to mlive.com.
David Miller, MD, president of University of Michigan Health, shared the following statement with Becker's: "We look forward to working collaboratively with the new union that represents our valued diagnostic technologists, who play such an important role in our patient care teams. As with all of our employee groups, we hope to work toward our shared goal: providing the best care possible for the patients of University of Michigan Health."
