Yale New Haven Health's 383-bed hospital explores integration plan

Bridgeport (Conn.) Hospital, part of Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health, is in talks to acquire Milford (Conn.) Hospital, Yale New Haven Health announced June 6.

Here are four things to know about the proposed deal:

1. The eight-hospital system said its board of trustees and Milford Hospital's board voted to explore an integration plan for Milford Hospital and Bridgeport Hospital.

2. Under the proposed agreement, Milford Hospital would be acquired by 383-bed Bridgeport Hospital. All current Milford employees would become part of Bridgeport Hospital.

3. Milford Hospital developed a collaborative relationship with Yale New Haven Health in 2014 following financial difficulties. Officials said the need for a broader relationship became more apparent as hospitals and health systems nationwide continue to be challenged by low reimbursement rates and other difficulties.

4. The transaction is pending approval by state and federal regulatory agencies, as well as approval by both institutions' boards.
