Western Maryland Health System exploring clinical partnerships with three academic medical centers

Cumberland-based Western Maryland Health System is seeking partners for a potential clinical affiliation — and three different health systems have come calling, according to The Tribune-Democrat.

WMHS President and CEO Barry Ronan said in a blog post that the health system is soliciting proposals from Morgantown-based West Virginia University Medicine, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Baltimore-based Maryland Medical System, according to the article.

As part of the courting process, representatives from the three organizations will visit the health system during the next 10 days. The institutions will submit official proposals this fall.

"Over the next three to five years, we will need physicians in the specialties of thoracic surgery, vascular surgery and neurosurgery, as well as support for our highly-rated cardiac surgery program," said Mr. Ronan. "A relationship with an academic medical center can help bring those physician specialists to WMHS so these services are provided locally. This type of partnership could also provide access to residency programs and its reputation can facilitate our physician recruitment efforts."
