In an effort to better coordinate care in Tennessee and Virginia, Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Johnson City, Tenn.-based Mountain States Health Alliance have signed an affiliation agreement.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and both organizations will still remain independent financially.
The partnership between MSHA and Vanderbilt will focus on quality, cost efficiencies and physician recruitment. Under the agreement, Vanderbilt will help MSHA recruit "hard-to-find specialists and subspecialists" to serve patients in northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, where MSHA's 12 acute-care hospitals are located. In addition, Vanderbilt and MSHA will share evidence-based care models focused on helping patients with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.
"We are pleased to announce this mutual affiliation between Vanderbilt and MSHA," said Dennis Vonderfecht, president and CEO of MSHA, in a news release. "This announcement represents the culmination of a three-year search process that MSHA leadership has undertaken, driven by the rapid changes taking place in our healthcare industry today."
Other focal points of the affiliation agreement include:
• Bringing medical research and clinical trials to MSHA's service area.
• Collaborating on cardiovascular and oncology services.
• Developing a statewide network to contract with payors for high-quality, efficient healthcare service.
