USF Health to Create New Health System With Lakeland Regional Health Systems

University of South Florida Health in Tampa is creating a new health system and hopes Lakeland (Fla.) Regional Health Systems will become the inaugural member.

Lakeland Regional Health includes Lakeland Regional Medical Center, an 851-bed, non-profit hospital with more than 4,500 employees and an active medical staff of 484 physicians. The health system will be asking approval from its board of directors later in September.

The partnership proposes creating approximately 200 new residency slots in west central Florida, which would make USF's the largest residency program in the state. In addition, the partnership would permit hospitals to align with the medical college to prepare for change in the healthcare system.

According to the release, USF Health plans to invite other hospitals and physician groups to join its health system.
