The University of Wisconsin Health in Madison and SwedishAmerican Health System in Rockford, Ill., have approved a letter of intent to merge.
UW Health, which is anchored by the UW School of Medicine, UW Medical Foundation and 566-bed UW Hospital and Clinics, is one of the top academic medical centers in the region. SwedishAmerican, located about 18 miles from the Wisconsin border, is comprised of two hospitals and 30 physician clinics.
Bill Gorski, MD, president and CEO of SwedishAmerican, said the merger is a "logical progression of our successful affiliation." UW Health and SwedishAmerican have been affiliated since 2010. The partnership led to the new $40 million SwedishAmerican Regional Cancer Center, which opened this past October, as well as telemedicine initiatives.
UW Health and SwedishAmerican executives expect the merger will close later this year, pending regulatory approval. Dr. Gorski will remain as CEO of SwedishAmerican, Donna Katen-Bahensky will continue to serve as president and CEO of UW Hospital and Clinics, and Jeffrey Grossman, MD, will remain as president and CEO of UW Medical Foundation.
