In a move that would halt a Midwest mega-merger, the University of Minnesota has indicated it would like to purchase Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services, according to a Star Tribune report.
At the end of March, Fairview and Fargo, N.D.-based Sanford Health announced they had entered exploratory merger discussions, which could ultimately create a $6 billion healthcare organization and one of the largest non-profit health systems in the upper Midwest.
The University of Minnesota currently controls Fairview's flagship hospital, the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, and has had ownership since 1997, according to the report. University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler said in a letter to Fairview executives the institution would be willing to buy all of Fairview's assets and liabilities. While nothing has been firmly proposed, the letter said the University of Minnesota is ready to conduct due diligence and could offer a letter of intent, according to the report.
Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson will hold a public meeting this weekend to lay out the situation and to discuss what would be best for the state. Previously, Ms. Swanson voiced concern over Fairview's potential merger with Sanford, saying it could have "sweeping consequences for Minnesota" and the quality of healthcare for the state's patients.
