Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System has finalized the affiliation of two of its member systems, Chester River Health System in Chestertown, Md., and Shore Health System in Cambridge, Md., according to a Dorchester Banner report.
The two merged systems include three acute-care hospitals: Chester River Hospital Center in Chestertown, Md., The Memorial Hospital at Easton (Md.) and Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge, Md. The new system, effective July 1, will be called University of Maryland Shore Regional Health, and each of the three hospitals will be renamed:
• University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Dorchester
• University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Easton
• University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown
The merger also resulted in 48 layoffs and the elimination of 52 vacant positions. University of Maryland officials attributed the layoffs to declining reimbursements and other "fiscal challenges," according to the report.
