Baltimore-based University of Maryland Medical System and Upper Chesapeake Health in Bel Air, Md., have finalized their merger deal, which has been four years in the making.
In 2009, Upper Chesapeake Health and UMMS started working together under a "strategic affiliation agreement." The finalized transaction brings both Upper Chesapeake Health hospitals — 185-bed Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and 89-bed Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, Md. — under the UMMS umbrella. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Both organizations said the prevailing triple aim philosophy of lower per capita healthcare costs, improved patient experience and clinical quality and better population health was a driving force behind the agreement.
Since UMMS and Upper Chesapeake Health announced their partnership, Upper Chesapeake Health has finished a mass-scale expansion plan and cancer care affiliation.
