The University of Colorado Hospital is ready to jumpstart discussions of a possible joint venture with Memorial Health System in Colorado Springs, according to a Gazette report.
The discussions would precede voters' decision whether to give the City Council authority to lease Memorial and make it city-owned. The council is expected to decide on Aug. 23 whether to put the question before voters in November.
Bruce Schroffel, president and CEO of UCH, is currently in the process of negotiating a similar joint operating arrangement with Poudre Valley Health System in Fort Collins, Colo. Mr. Schroffel distinguished the proposed deal from a merger, since Memorial would retain its assets.
"We think it would be a strong relationship between the three hospitals, if we could make that work," Mr. Schroffel said. While he's talked with Memorial's leadership about the opportunities, Mr. Schroffel said a deal's completion would likely require the city to first lease Memorial to an independent non-profit.
