University of Chicago Medicine partnered with Munster, Ind.-based Community Hospital to provide specialized care for expectant mothers facing high-risk pregnancies.
Previously, women living in Northwest Indiana with high-risk pregnancies would have to be referred to a hospital outside of the region to receive complex care.
The new partnership allows University of Chicago Medicine's maternal-fetal specialists to see inpatients at Community Hospital. Under the agreement, the specialists from University of Chicago Medicine will work with the expectant mother's primary care physician to provide screening, counseling and fetal diagnostic testing.
"It is a win-win situation to have a group of subspecialists available to care for the mother," Martin Kelly, MD, a neonatologist at University of Chicago Medicine, said. "This ensures that the patient gets the best care possible closest to home."
