San Francisco-based UCSF Medical Center, including its UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, and Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland (Calif.) have signed a formal letter of intent to develop an affiliation, according to a San Francisco Business Times report.
Discussions between the hospitals for an affiliation became public in June. According to the report, key objectives of an affiliation could include:
• Maintaining high-quality care
• Creating nationally prominent clinical care and academic programs
• Combining research efforts to achieve high rankings in pediatric research funding
• Attaching and retaining top faculty and research specialists
• Improving the combined financial operating performance of both hospitals
The affiliation will require approval by the Regents of the University of California and Children's Oakland's board of directors. An agreement could be made by the summer of 2013, according to the report.
