Trinity Health, Catholic Health East Complete Merger

One of the largest mergers in the hospital and health system industry is now complete, as Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health and Newtown Square, Pa.-based Catholic Health East closed their deal to create one of the country's biggest Catholic health systems.

The newly merged health system, currently unnamed, will have its main headquarters in Livonia. It will also have two divisions: Trinity Health Division in Livonia and CHE Division in Newtown Square. The organization consists of 82 hospitals across 21 states, annual operating revenue of $13.3 billion and assets of more than $19 billion. That puts the merged entity behind only St. Louis-based Ascension Health, which is the largest Catholic-based health system in the U.S.

"Today, by bringing Catholic Health East and Trinity Health together, we have enhanced our ability to create innovative models of care and advance clinical quality across the continuum," said Judith Persichilli, interim president and CEO of the new Trinity-CHE system, in a news release. "The consolidation will help address the rapidly changing healthcare environment that requires more focus on population health and the delivery of more coordinated and integrated care and health and wellness services."

Trinity and CHE announced their intent to merge in October. Some of the largest hospitals and networks within the new organization are Loyola University Health System in Maywood, Ill., Mercy Health in Norton Shores, Mich., Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus, Ohio, Saint Alphonsus Health System in Boise, Idaho, and St. Peter's Health Partners in Albany, N.Y.
