Boston-based Steward Health Care System has hired lobbyist Joseph Walsh of Government Strategies Inc., and former mayor of Warwick, R.I., to assist the for-profit hospital operator in its dealings with regulators over its planned merger with Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, R.I., according to a Woonsocket Call report.
Steward received a one-time extension from state regulators to resubmit its merger application with Landmark after its first application was deemed incomplete. The health system has until Jan. 11 to resubmit the application; supporters of the deal argue it is needed to keep the Woonsocket hospital up and running. Landmark has been in receivership since 2008, according to the report.
