Steward, Cleveland Clinic + 5 other hospitals expanding overseas

Several large-scale hospitals and health systems have announced plans to expand services or operations overseas in 2018.

Here are seven hospitals that have revealed plans to branch out of the U.S. in 2018:

1. Steward Health Care finalizes partnership to provide healthcare services in Malta
Boston-based Steward Health Care, the largest hospital operator in the U.S., finalized a public-private partnership to assume control of several public medical facilities in Malta in February.

2. Cleveland Clinic makes foray into China
In July, Cleveland Clinic formed a strategic collaboration with a hospital in China through its international affiliation program.

3. UHS significantly expands UK presence: 3 things to know
King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services acquired the Danshell Group, which owns 25 facilities that provide disability and autism services in the U.K., in August.

4. UPMC opens 2nd cancer center in Italy
UPMC opened a radiotherapy center in southern Italy in October that will become part of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, one of the largest integrated cancer networks in the U.S.

5. ProMedica CEO visits China to draw genetics firm to Toledo
ProMedica President and CEO Randy Oostra said in October the health system has been in talks with a Chinese genomic and genetic-testing company to open an operation in Toledo.

6. Penn Medicine expands into UK
The University of Pennsylvania Health System revealed plans in November to expand into the U.K. with the opening of a facility in London.

7. Mount Sinai expands into China
Mount Sinai Health System signed an agreement in November to provide clinical, educational and training programs to a hospital Nanjing, China.
