St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md., has attracted five suitors for a partnership despite its poor financial standing and recent allegations of unnecessary stent procedures by its physicians, according to a Baltimore Sun report.
The following hospitals and health systems have expressed interest in St. Joseph:
• University of Maryland Medical System, based in Baltimore
• LifeBridge Health, based in Baltimore
• Medstar Health, based in Columbia, Md.
• Greater Baltimore Medical Center
• St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore
St. Joseph called for strategic partnership suits in October, asking interested parties to submit their detailed proposals by the end of December. Negotiations with finalists will begin in mid-January, according to the report. The partnership arrangement could range from sharing facilities to a merger.
In 2010, St. Joseph agreed to pay $22 million to settle allegations that it paid kickbacks to a group of cardiologists. One of its former cardiologists, Mark Midei, MD, was also accused of implanting hundreds of unnecessary coronary stents in patients.
