Last week, Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford and Goodall Hospital in Sanford, Maine, completed their merger and became Biddeford-based Southern Maine Health Care.
The two hospitals merged after operating under parent company SMHC, the York County member of Portland-based MaineHealth, for more than a year. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Goodall Hospital has become Southern Maine Health Care, Sanford Campus, and former Goodall President and CEO Patsy Aprile is now SMHC COO.
In a news release, SMHC President and CEO Ed McGeachey said financial pressures, including Medicare and Medicaid pay cuts and an increase in charity care and bad debt, drove the merger.
"SMHC's larger scale and membership in MaineHealth enables us to achieve important cost savings so we can continue to provide excellent care, decrease the cost of providing care and sustain critical services," Mr. McGeachey said in the release.
