Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., and Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, N.J., have signed a definitive merger agreement.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. New Jersey Acting Attorney General John Jay Hoffman will now have to approve the agreement. Both organizations expect the deal to close next year.
Under the merger agreement, the 355-bed Somerset will merge with the 600-bed RWJUH, creating a larger academic medical center with two campuses. RWJUH is the flagship of Robert Wood Johnson Health System, which encompasses five hospitals.
In June, Somerset officials announced their selection of RWJUH as the merger partner. This came after months of partnership searches, which also included talks with Morristown, N.J.-based Atlantic Health System.
