Novant, UVA Health create new regional system in Virginia

Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health and University of Virginia Health System, based in Charlottesville, have closed on a deal to create a new organization called Novant Health UVA Health System.

The two organizations began partnership discussions last year and signed a letter of intent to create a new regional health system in March 2015.

With the deal finalized, Novant's Virginia operations will join UVA Culpeper (Va.) Hospital to form the regional health system. Novant Health physician practices in the Northern Virginia area will also become part of the health system.

Melissa Robson, who currently serves as president of Novant Health's Northern Virginia Market, will serve as CEO for the new regional health system.

"We believe this partnership will enable us to provide remarkable care in an efficient manner," said Ms. Robson. "The partnership means that patients in Northern Virginia will be able to connect with UVA Health System's strong subspecialty care and clinical trials, while benefiting from Novant Health's experience with increasing access to care when and where patients need it."

Novant Health has 60 percent ownership of the joint operating company that will oversee the regional health system and UVA Health System has 40 percent ownership.
