New York's Auburn Hospital Union Plans to Rally Against Proposed Merger

The union representing workers at Auburn Memorial Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., are planning a rally tomorrow to express their concerns over the hospital's possible merger with a larger system, according to a Post-Standard report.

Auburn had issued a request for proposals to five hospitals in August. Those were Syracuse-based SUNY Upstate Medical University, Crouse Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital and Health Center; and Rochester-based Strong Memorial Hospital and Rochester General Health System. The deadline for proposals is tomorrow.

Workers represented by 1199 SEIU want to let city officials know that a merger or affiliation with another system may have negative effects on local residents. A hospital nurse said those opposing a merger want to "keep Auburn a full-service community hospital and not just a [Band-Aid] center or clinic," according to the report.

A hospital official said several hospitals have expressed interest in Auburn, but details on the interested suitors were not disclosed.
