The 1,000-bed Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus, N.J., could be put up for sale because it treats too many patients from outside the county and may need $13.2 million in upgrades this year, according to a report from The Record.
The hospital is owned by the Bergen County Improvement Authority, which has requested a "litany of financial and operational information" from the for-profit company that manages Bergen to determine if the county should continue to own the facility. Authority officials said the request for information, such as admissions data, inspection reports and physician contracts, is the first step in the process and no decisions have been made.
More than half of the 11,253 patients treated at the hospital in 2009 were not county residents. Authority officials say they want to ensure Bergen County taxpayers' money is properly serving county residents.
