Executives at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tenn., and Covenant Health in Knoxville, Tenn., have signed a nonbinding letter of intent to merge.
Both organizations will now undergo due diligence before signing a definitive agreement. State and federal authorities must also sign off on the deal. Executives expect the transaction will close before the end of 2013.
Cumberland Medical Center is a 189-bed community hospital. Covenant Health has seven acute-care hospitals, one behavioral health hospital and several outpatient facilities throughout eastern Tennessee.
