MD Anderson, UTHSC exploring ways to expand cancer care in Texas

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston are exploring ways to expand cancer care in San Antonio, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

If UTHSC, which includes the Cancer Therapy & Research Center, did collaborate with MD Anderson, San Antonio residents traveling to MD Anderson for cancer treatment would be able to receive much of that care where they live, said Raymond Greenberg, MD, PhD, the UT System's executive vice chancellor for health affairs, according to the report.

Although discussions have started, the two parties have not worked out specific details.

Francisco González-Scarano, MD, the health science center's executive vice president for medical affairs, said in a statement that UTHSC will explore opportunities with MD Anderson Cancer Center "on possibilities to enhance the patient experience, deliver additional needed cancer services to residents and complement the advanced care and research provided in this market."

MD Anderson is widely regarded as one of the top cancer centers in the nation. CTRC has provided cancer care to patients in San Antonio and South Texas for more than four decades.
