Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital officials said they are close to finalizing the acquisition agreement with Dover, N.H.-based Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.
Under the terms of the agreement, MGH will acquire Wentworth-Douglass. However, the hospital will retain its name and remain an independently licensed, nonprofit organization. The transaction gives Wentworth-Douglass patients access to additional services provided by MGH, according to the article.
Jeffrey Hughes, vice president and chief strategy officer at Wentworth-Douglass, spoke at a community forum Nov. 3. He said the acquisition proposal was approved by federal regulatory agencies and is waiting on state approval from the necessary agencies in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Officials at Wentworth-Douglass said the decision to connect with MGH stemmed from the financial pressure the hospital faces to reduce healthcare costs, according to the article.
