Massachusetts Approves Beth Israel Deaconess, Jordan Hospital Transaction

After months of review, the Massachusetts Public Health Council has signed off on the pending transaction between Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and Jordan Health Systems, parent company of Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, Mass.

Jordan will become part of BIDMC on Jan. 1, 2014, and its new name will be Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth. BIDMC has a similar structure for its hospitals in Milton, Mass., and Needham, Mass.

Jordan will still retain its local management, board governance and independent medical staff. BIDMC will have representatives on Jordan's board, and it will also provide capital investments for physician recruitment as well as strategic, financial and operational planning. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

BIDMC and Jordan signed a definitive agreement to combine their organizations in August. Since then, the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission released a report saying the deal was unlikely to drive up healthcare costs in the surrounding communities.
