KU Hospital partners with Hays hospital

Kansas City-based The University of Kansas Hospital signed a letter of intent to partner with Hays (Kan.) Medical Center to enhance patient care, especially in rural areas.

Hospital leaders said the partnership reflects a common long-term vision to improve and expand high-quality, cost-efficient healthcare in the nonprofit setting throughout Kansas.

Under the partnership, John Jeter, MD, will remain CEO of Hays and Bob Page will remain president and CEO of KU Hospital. All staff will remain at their current facilities. In addition, boards at both facilities will continue, but an operations council including members from both hospitals will be created to direct the partnership.

Dr. Jeter said it is difficult for a hospital to remain independent. "By partnering with The University of Kansas Hospital, the state's only academic medical center, I believe we will see leading edge medical developments come to our patients more quickly," he said.

According to the release, both organizations are in "solid financial and operating condition," and the announcement follows several years of discussion. Partnership details will be determined this fall and implementation will begin in early 2017.
