Johnston Health in North Carolina Pursues Partnership

The governing board of Johnston Health in Smithfield, N.C., has voted to pursue a partnership with a large hospital rather than a large healthcare company, according to a Herald report.

The board believes a partnership with a large hospital would give local leaders a stronger voice in decision-making, and would align Johnston Health with an organization able to improve Johnston's access to capital, according to the report.

Johnston Health has struggled financially in recent years. In August 2011, the system outsourced food and janitorial services to cut costs.

In November 2011, Johnston Health was considering a new management model to replace its longtime operator, Quorum Health Resources in Brentwood, Tenn. The board sent out requests for information to around ten healthcare firms.

According to the report, WakeMed in Raleigh, N.C., Duke University Health System in Durham, N.C., and Vidant Health in Greenville, N.C., submitted proposals based on the requests for information.

Before picking a partner, Johnston's board will send out proposal requests outlining an ideal relationship.
