Jefferson Hospital, UPMC end joint venture: 3 things to know

Allegheny Health Network's Jefferson Hospital in Jefferson Hills, Pa., has ended a partnership with Pittsburgh-based UPMC for cancer care, according to a Pittsburgh Business Times report.

Jefferson instead will offer the treatment through its own program.

Here are three things to know about the joint venture.

1. Both sides formed the 50-50 partnership 10 years ago to offer radiation oncology care to patients at Jefferson, according to the report.

2. There was later strain on the relationship. According to the report, that tension occurred when UPMC rival Pittsburgh-based Highmark acquired Jefferson in 2013 and AHN opened the Cancer Institute at Jefferson Hospital last year.

3. Jefferson Hospital President Louise Urban said in a statement that the decision to end the joint venture was reached jointly with UPMC, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times. "With the formation of AHN and the significant investments we have made in our cancer care capabilities, this transition of radiation oncology services is another important step in providing more comprehensive and integrated cancer care at Jefferson and across AHN," Ms. Urban said in a prepared release.
