The total number of healthcare mergers and acquisitions hit a record high in 2018, and there were more than 400 deals announced in the third quarter of this year.
Here are seven transactions involving hospitals and health systems that were announced, finalized or moved forward in the past two weeks:
1. Banner acquires Colorado hospital
Phoenix-based Banner Health acquired North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, which it has operated since 1995.
2. Bon Secours Mercy Health to acquire majority stake in nonprofit joint venture
Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health plans to acquire a majority stake in Charleston, S.C.-based Roper St. Francis Healthcare, a joint venture formed by three systems 21 years ago.
3. RWJBarnabas to buy 2 New Jersey hospitals
West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health signed a letter of intent to buy two hospitals from Jersey City, N.J.-based CarePoint Health.
4. Ascension to sell 2 Wisconsin hospitals
Ascension Wisconsin entered into a nonbinding memorandum of understanding to sell two Wisconsin hospitals to Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic Health System.
5. Hackensack Meridian to add another hospital, 900 physicians to network
Board members of Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health and Englewood (N.J.) Health signed a definitive agreement to merge Oct. 15.
6. Penn State Health to become new owner of Geisinger's Holy Spirit Health
Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger plans to transfer ownership of Holy Spirit Health System in Camp Hill, Pa., to Hershey, Pa.-based Penn State Health.
7. RWJBarnabas to acquire Trinitas
After months of negotiations, Elizabeth, N.J.-based Trinitas Regional Health Network signed a letter of intent to join West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health.
