The total number of healthcare mergers and acquisitions hit a record high in 2018, and there were more than 400 deals announced in the third quarter of this year.
Here are 12 transactions involving hospitals and health systems that were announced, finalized or moved forward in the last three weeks:
1. Community Health Network acquires Fairbanks addiction services
Indianapolis-based Community Health Network has acquired addiction treatment provider Fairbanks.
2. Mayo Regional Hospital-Northern Light merger gets go-ahead from Maine regulators
The proposed merger of Mayo Regional Hospital and Northern Light Health took a step forward after it gained preliminary support from Maine health regulators.
3. UPMC acquires second hospital in Ireland
Pittsburgh-based UPMC is expanding operations in Ireland with the acquisition of its second hospital.
4. HCA divests long-term care hospital in Texas
A division of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare sold a 65-bed long-term acute care hospital to a Dallas-based specialty hospital operator.
5. 81-bed Alabama hospital to join UAB Health System
Alexander City, Ala.-based Russell Medical will become part of the Birmingham, Ala.-based UAB Health System.
6. CommonSpirit divests KentuckyOne Health
The University of Louisville (Ky.) completed its acquisition of KentuckyOne Health from Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health on Nov. 1.
7. Georgia health system to join Atrium Health
Citing increased pressures and competition, Rome, Ga.-based Floyd Health System plans to join Charlotte-based Atrium Health by the end of 2020.
8. LifePoint inks $700M deal with Medical Properties Trust
Medical Properties Trust, a real estate investment firm, will purchase the real estate assets of 10 acute care hospitals from Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health for $700 million.
9. UHS inks deal to build ASC network
King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services, in partnership with Westchester, Ill.-based Regent Surgical Health, will build out a network of ambulatory surgery centers across the U.S.
10. Baptist Health to acquire Kentucky hospital after lawsuit dropped
Louisville, Ky.-based Baptist Health can now proceed with its plan to buy Hardin Memorial Health in Elizabethtown, Ky., after a physician opposed to the deal agreed to drop a lawsuit.
11. Mercy Hospital in Minnesota to join Essentia Health
In an effort to have greater financial stability, Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake, Minn., will join Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health.
12. CHS to sell 3 hospitals, exit Virginia
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems has entered into a definitive agreement to sell three Virginia hospitals to Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health.
