Pittsburgh-based insurer Highmark and West Penn Allegheny Health System are reopening the emergency department at West Penn today, according to a system news release.
The ED closed in December 2010 due to financial difficulties. The reopened ED includes a redesigned patient entry, technological upgrades and a fast track patient triage system.
The ED's reopening comes as the hospital expands its inpatient services, including renovations for its medical, surgical and intensive care units, which will now be all private rooms.
State regulators still have to approve Highmark's pending $475 million acquisition of the financially-troubled hospital system. West Penn has said it expects regulatory approval by the fall.
