For-profit HCA Midwest Health System, a Kansas City, Mo.-based subsidiary of Hospital Corporation of America, will purchase Carondelet Health, a two-hospital system also based in Kansas City.
St. Louis-based Ascension Health currently owns Carondelet Health. Under the deal, which was brought to light in October, Ascension will sell 310-bed St. Joseph Medical Center, 146-bed St. Mary's Medical Center and several other Carondelet facilities and services to HCA Midwest for an undisclosed sum of money.
When the transaction closes, HCA Midwest will become the largest health system in the Kansas City metropolitan area with 12 hospitals, seven ambulatory surgery centers and more than 10,000 employees.
HCA Midwest officials said they will work with the local Catholic Diocese to keep St. Joseph and St. Mary's as Catholic hospitals.
HCA Midwest and Ascension expect the deal to close by the end of this year, pending regulatory approvals.
