University Hospital and MCGHealth, both in Augusta, Ga., are exploring new collaborations, such as sharing laboratories and increasing MCGHealth residency programs at University, according to an Augusta Chronicle report.
The hospital and health system are collaborating on a joint community needs assessment and local health information exchange, allowing Augusta's hospitals to share records.
In the past, 581-bed University Hospital was the teaching hospital for residents at the Medical College of Georgia until 2003, when MCG pulled back residencies at that hospital. A small number of MCG medical students began serving residencies at University in 2007, but the hospital says it can take on more. There are currently two MCG general surgeon residents at University and the hospital says it has up to 14 slots available.
Ricardo Azziz, chairman of the MCGHealth board, said in the report, "The vision that we have is to transform the region and institution into a healthcare/biomedical research destination. And we can only do that, actually, if all of our healthcare systems within the area collaborate together."
