Atlanta-based Emory University, which owns Emory Healthcare, and Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health System, the largest nonprofit system in Georgia, are discussing the prospect of joining forces to create a new health system.
Over the next 45 days, the executive committee of the EmoryUniversity board trustees and WellStar Health's board of trustees will engage in talks concerning the formation of a new system.
"Combining the significant resources, talent and expertise of Emory Healthcare and WellStar Health System would bring together two highly respected institutions that together are well know for their commitment to patient care, education, discovery and innovation," said John Morgan, chair of the Emory University board of trustees.
"This move is an affirmation of our commitment to providing world-class care to our communities long-term," said Gary Miller, chair of WellStar board of trustees.
