New Hanover (N.C.) County commissioners have rejected a management contract between New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System, according to a Star News Online report.
Commissioners were told that the county would retain control of the hospital under the deal, but the majority remained unconvinced. In a 4-1 vote, county commissioners said they were concerned the integration with Carolinas HealthCare would be "too much to undo," with one commissioner saying the deal looked like a "slow motion sale of the hospital," according to the report.
Jack Barto, president and CEO of NHRMC, said he was surprised and disappointed by the vote. He said the agreement with Carolinas HealthCare was the best option and there were not any close second choices.
