Complaint Filed Against Arizona Healthcare Affiliation for Setting Religious Restrictions on Healthcare

Seven people have filed a complaint with the Arizona state attorney general’s office, saying a recent affiliation between a Catholic healthcare network and a nonsectarian hospital has introduced religious restrictions at the hospital, according to a Sierra Vista Herald report.

The affiliation between Sierra Vista (Ariz.) Regional Health Center and Tucson, Ariz.-based Carondelet Health Network, a Catholic entity, was intended to leave the two organizations separate while sharing resources. The affiliation went into effect on April 17.

As a result of the partnership, the 88-bed SVRC is following Catholic health doctrine, according to the report. The complaint mentions the loss of women’s reproductive services at SVRC, such as tubal ligations. Some physicians have left the community as a result, leaving patients seeking services elsewhere.

The complaint calls for a review of the affiliation, citing a violation of patient rights.
