Executives from Chicago-based Northwestern Memorial HealthCare and Roseland Community Hospital met several weeks ago to discuss a potential partnership, according to a Crain's Chicago Business report.
The organizations did not discuss a merger, but agreed to meet again in early 2012 to discuss a formal alliance.
The organizations discussed roles Northwestern could take in the development of a new medical district in the area surrounding Roseland, which is located in the city's Far South Side and treats a large number of Medicaid and uninsured patients. The organizations also discussed whether Northwestern, a teaching hospital, could refer medical residents to treat patients at Roseland, according to the report.
A Northwestern spokesperson denied any ties between the potential partnership and Northwestern's recent struggles with the Illinois Department of Revenue over the tax-exempt status of its Prentice Women's Hospital, according to the report. In August, the IDR denied property tax-exempt status to Prentice, saying it did not spend enough of its net patient revenue on charity care.
