CHE Trinity Health, St. Joseph's Hospital Call Off Affiliation

Livonia, Mich.-based CHE Trinity Health and St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, N.Y., have decided to not move forward with their proposed affiliation.

This past July, the 431-bed, independent St. Joseph's and CHE Trinity Health signed a nonbinding letter of intent to affiliate. Under the proposed deal, St. Joseph's would have become part of the system, which was the result of the merger between Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health and Newtown Square, Pa.-based Catholic Health East.

In a letter to employees, CHE Trinity Health Interim President and CEO Judy Persichilli said both organizations agreed to abandon the transaction after three months of due diligence. However, she did not specify what issues, if any, derailed negotiations.

"We concluded that now is not the right time for us to come together," Ms. Persichilli wrote. "We believe a better alternative is to pursue a strategic affiliation agreement that enables us to share ideas and resources that can strengthen our ministries."
