Carondelet Health Looks for Partner in Kansas City

Two-hospital Carondelet Health is considering a merger or acquisition by another health system or hospital in the Kansas City, Mo.-area, according to a Kansas City Star report.

Carondelet is a member of Ascension Health and the parent company to St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City and St. Mary's Medical Center in Blue Springs, Mo.

Kansas City-based HCA Health Midwest System and St. Luke's Health System and Merriam, Mo.-based Shawnee Mission Medical Center have recently held discussions with Carondelet, according to the report.

Carondelet President and CEO Fleury Yelvington confirmed that merger discussions have "intensified recently" due to the pressures of healthcare reform and a "myriad of other reimbursement and care delivery issues," according to the report.

Spokespeople for HCA and St. Luke’s declined to comment, according to the report. Ken Bacon, CEO of Shawnee Mission, said the hospital is "continually looking for growth opportunities throughout the community" but has "nothing new to announce at this time," according to the report.
