Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Mo., is considering leases with various health systems, according to a Columbia Daily Tribune report.
Here are six things to know.
1. The hospital's current lease with St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare expires in 2020. By December 2018, both parties must decide if they want to continue, modify or terminate the lease, according to the report.
2. In addition to BJC, the hospital is considering leases with a number of organizations. These organizations include University of Missouri Health Care in Columbia, Kansas City, Mo.-based St. Luke's Hospital and Brentwood, Tenn.-based Duke LifePoint Healthcare.
3. As part of MU Health's proposal, the Boone Hospital Center Operating Company would be established, and the company would lease BHC and report to the University of Missouri Curators, reports Columbia Daily Tribune. MU Health seeks a lease of three decades or longer.
4. A proposal from St. Luke's would create a new hospital corporation, owned by St. Luke's, to lease BHC and St. Luke's Hospital. St. Luke's Hospital proposed an initial commitment of a decade and five-year renewals.
5. Duke LifePoint's proposal calls for creating a new joint venture, the report states. The joint venture would split ownership between Duke LifePoint and BHC at 80 percent and 20 percent, respectively. Keith Hearle, healthcare consultant for the Boone Hospital Center Board of Trustees, said Duke LifePoint proposed a 40-year lease, although BHC has asked Duke LifePoint to consider a lease with less time attached, reports Columbia Daily Tribune.
6. BHC also has the option to become a standalone operation, where a newly-created nonprofit would manage the hospital, according to the report.
