Lake Mary, Fla.-based Axium Pharmacy, a subsidiary of Cincinnati-based Kroger, will acquire outstanding shares of Orlando-based ModernHealth to create a combined specialty pharmacy fully operated by Kroger.
The acquisition will allow Kroger to expand its pharmacy services to the western and southwestern states. The company already operates 2,230 pharmacies and 195 clinics.
The combined company facility will be located in Lake Mary, Fla. Officials said they hope to hire approximately 800 new employees and that the company will continue to operate independently within the Kroger family.
ModernHealth CEO Dom Meffe will lead the new specialty pharmacy arm once the merger is finalized.
The transaction is subject to certain regulatory approvals. Financial terms were not disclosed.
